Janet Jackson opened her Las Vegas residency yesterday, the 17th, at the MGM Grand Hotel, Park Theater. She came onstage about 25 minutes late, descending on a Taurus shaped ring — that is her astrological sign — after an intro featuring her 1993 opera staple “This Time”, feat. Kathleen Battle. The diva opened the concert with 1997’s “Empty”, a song about online dating, setting the mood with a fan-favorite. Her lime-green robe revealed an electric pink ensemble underneath as she transitioned into ‘Feedback’ with a full break, and ‘Trust A Try’, for the first time since the All For You Tour. ‘If’ and ‘You’ followed, reminiscing the Velvet Rope Tour.

For the first time in decades, she performed a full out Control Medley, with What Have You Done For Me Lately, Control, Nasty, When I Think Of You and The Pleasure Principle, closing with a first-time, 80’s flavored full performance of 2004’s R&B Junkie. Her black ensemble was reminiscent of old Control days.

With an elaborate interlude about self-identity, Janet set the tone for her slow grooves ‘That’s The Way Love Goes’ and ‘Got ‘Til It’s Gone’, revealing a silverish garment on top of her black tights. The segment featured other slow, romantic songs, such as first-timer ‘China Love’, and it ended with classic hits ‘Together Again’ and ‘All For You’.

Then came an interlude with her unreleased, Neptunes-produced song ‘Ruff’, originally intended for Damita Jo. The visuals showed chains and reverberated a sexual mood, hinting at what was about to come. Janet felt herself on the floor as she sang ‘I Get Lonely’, proceeding onto her oral-sex anthem ‘Moist’ and Any Time, Any Place, at which point she called a fan onstage for the first time since 2010, showing fans that the Janet that loves sex — and whom we love — is still alive.

After DJ Aktive performed his set, Janet came back with a fresh ensemble that reminded us of her ‘Made For Now’ outfits, performing the Timbaland Remix of Go Deep for the first time, along with dance numbers for Come On Get Up and Rock With U. A short film featuring 2006’s ‘This Body’ had Janet looking at words such as ‘discrimination’, ‘sexism’ and ‘injustice’, paving the way for the most anticipated segment of the night.

With a stage setup reminiscent of the Rhythm Nation Tour, Janet performed all the singles from that album, plus ‘The Knowledge’, wearing a military-inspired outfit. The section gave way to the emotional climax of the night: an interlude about her son ‘Eissa’, claiming that motherhood was her biggest dream and her ultimate metamorphosis. The show ended with ‘Made For Now’.

JANET.br | Janet Jackson Brasil

JANET.br started in 2014 with two fans from São Paulo, Brazil, who had been keeping track of Janet Jackson's work since mid-00's.

We started on Facebook, grew out to other social networks, and then built a website with news and photo gallery. Since then, Brazil, who had never been an expressive fanbase, became one of the biggest hubs of discussion about Janet, and we became one of the biggest international communities about the star.

We're still here, bringing information to the JanFam and, maybe one day, we'll get Janet to come to Brazil.
